RTP vs Volatility: What Is the Difference?
RTP and volatility answer different questions. RTP estimates how much a game returns across a very large sample. Volatility describes the size and frequency pattern of results along the way.
RTP is a long-run average
A 96% theoretical RTP does not mean a player receives 96 chips back from every 100-chip session. Small samples can finish far above or below the mathematical average.
Volatility is the shape of the ride
Low-volatility games generally spread return across more frequent, smaller results. High-volatility games generally have longer dry spells and less frequent large results.
Use both when choosing
If you prefer steadier sessions, compare low-volatility games. If you accept wider swings for rarer large outcomes, high volatility may fit—but it does not improve RTP.
